10:00 AM - 11:00 AM
This online class will be led by King's Professor of Political Science, Dr. Beth Admiraal. Entitled "Putin's Russia: Lessons drawn from the 'Red Lines'." Putin's annual state of the nation address in the spring of 2021 included a warning to the West that if it crossed a "red line" with Russia, there would be "an asymmetrical, rapid, and severe response." This class will explore the various "red lines" that Putin has either challenged or reinforced in his twenty years in office, as both president and prime minister. Some of these lines of contention concern physical borders, such as Putin contesting the Ukrainian-Russian border or pushing against NATO. Other lines are linguistic and ethnic boundaries, such as Putin's insistence that the Russian Orthodoxy play a central role in defining the Russian nation. What is Putin up to? From the compilation of these red lines we can draw preliminary conclusions about what it means to be Russian in Putin's Russia, and what that might mean for the West. Registrants will have an option of attending this event in person or via Zoom. If you select via Zoom, an link will be emailed to you in advance of the event.
